Overview
Global water consumption is increasing day by day. Water pollution is caused by global warming and climate change, causing the gradual depletion of clean water resources. Almost one-third of the countries in the world have very limited access to water.
We focused on creating awareness through technology. The Suna App is designed to assist individuals in controlling their water usage
In this project undertaken by the Innovation team, I, as the sole designer, was responsible for the product design and the UX/UI experience of the application. Our project team consisted of an Innovation Director, a Product Manager, 3 Engineers, a Front-end Developer, and myself.

Lack of awareness and discipline in individual water consumption
I conducted a team brainstorming workshop to uncover the pains individuals experience. The following main points were revealed:
Individuals lack sufficient knowledge about the direct and indirect impact of their water consumption on the environment.
Individuals are not consistently taking actions in a disciplined manner to reduce their water consumption.
Individuals lack information on calculating and reducing their water footprint.

In the research phase, I performed a literature review followed by a survey, and additionally, conducted user interviews. A total of 72 participants engaged in the survey, ensuring anonymity to encourage candid responses. The user interviews, involving 12 individuals, aimed to uncover insights into people's ideas and habits related to water consumption. The collected quantitative and qualitative data were meticulously analyzed using an affinity map. The combined analysis of the literature review, in-depth qualitative interviews, and survey results provided a holistic understanding of the subject.
We discovered the top insights:

From these findings, we decided as a product to identify key goals:
1- Calculating water footprint

At this stage, we began by jotting down ideas on post-it notes and used diverse and convergent thinking to prioritize the most crucial ones. After selecting the best ideas, we honed in on the platform by creating a mind map to best represent the product vision.

Defining the MVP
I conducted another workshop session with the team to map out the user flow and come up with a storyboard to capture the MVP.
We identified the following key features:
Water Footprint Calculator: Set of questions empowering individuals to manage and control their water consumption through the calculation of their water footprint.
Daily tasks: Task initiation based on the user's initially calculated water footprint data upon entering the platform.
Coin System: An integrated system enabling users to amass coins through task completion, which can later be expended in predetermined channels during the subsequent phase. In addition this, a blockchain infrastructure that will enable us to convert these coins into real coins in the future phases.
Task Sharing and Incentives: A mechanism acknowledging and rewarding users who share specific tasks on various platforms, including social media.
As an example, users participating in sharing a particular task could receive an extra 50 coins as a reward. In addition user involved in a task can comment and recommend it.
Water Usage Tracker: An interactive tracker enabling users to visualize and monitor their water consumption in detail.

Wireframing the solution
Wireframing the solution
Wireframing the solution
I created a wireframe to see the design requirements we defined to prototype it and run a series of tests. Based on the test results,
we made some minor changes and then moved on to the visual design.
Water footprint calculator
When users sign up for the app, they are involved in a water footprint calculation process. They are asked a set of 20+ questions about their individual water consumption at home. These questions are related to areas where water consumption occurs, such as bathrooms, kitchens and gardens. The system then calculates the user's average daily water consumption in liters and displays it to the user. When determining these questions, we based on the calculation criteria of the Grace Communication Foundation.

Dashboard & Tasks
After calculating the water footprint, the user is directed to the main dashboard.
Here the user sees the approximate annual and daily average of water consumption.
The purpose of the application is to reduce the user's consumption by involving him in various tasks.
These tasks are completely declaration-based and aimed at raising awareness. The user commits to continue this task for 21 days.
Because according to scientific research, it takes 21 days for a behavior to turn into a habit.
Every 21 days, the user starts a new task and receives reminders and motivational notifications from the app about the task during
this period.

Water Tracking & Coins
Each task has a specific coin value, and the earned coins can be donated or converted into gift cards.
As part of gamification, users earn new badges as they complete tasks.
On the tracking screen, users can see their usage by month and the distribution of this usage by water consumption areas.

Concept and Branding
Before getting into the visual design, I first worked on the style and made a mood board. I aimed for a simple and fitting concept.
I chose the Nunito font family, which looks good on mobile, and paired it with soft, water-inspired colors. The design is minimalistic with rounded elements for a clean look.
We aimed to combine the water droplet with a technological motif in the application's logo. Considering the future integration of blockchain technology into this project, we reflected this theme in our logo. We like to define Suna as a technological water-saving app.
We named the application Suna. Suna, which means 'Shelduck' in Turkish, is a type of duck that likes to live in wetlands.

We know that transforming the created awareness into a disciplined habit is difficult. Focusing on this aspect, we will work on gamification scenarios that will enhance user motivation and daily tasks.
We aim to provide users with socialization opportunities beyond commenting and sharing tasks, aspiring to create a more interactive application.
By implementing the airdrop token system outlined in our roadmap, we aim to integrate Suna with water bills. We are preparing to collaborate with local authorities and municipalities for this integration.
We want to focus on the micro-interactions that we currently consider weak in the application and come up with creative solutions.
Takeaways
We found ways to collect user feedback from the beginning to the end of the process and were inspired by them to create a significant impact with a simple app.
Involving engineers at almost every stage ensured a good understanding of technical constraints and collaborative planning for future phases.
A strong product strategy and planning are essential to stay true to the core features and avoid deviating from the context of the MVP.

Conclusion
Raising Awareness With Tons of Water Drops
We have achieved our initial goal of creating awareness among individuals in Turkey to reduce their water consumption on a personal level and make it sustainable.
After the initial version of the app was released on Apple and Google Store, we witnessed a water savings of 79.2 tons in the first month and 97.8 tons in the second month. In the following months, this figure reached an average of around 200 tons. The feedback we continuously received from the app users was satisfying.
